The Society of the Cincinnati was founded in 1783 by the officers of theContinental Army to perpetuate their fellowship, preserve the memory of theRevolutionary War and promote the principles for which they had fought. The Society is namedafter Cincinnatus, a hero of the Roman republic who refused rewards for serving his nationand returned to his plow after leading the armies of Rome to victory.George Washington, portrayed in this statue by Jean-Antoine Houdon returning hometo Mount Vernon after the Revolutionary War, was celebrated as the American Cincinnatus.He served as President General of the Society from 1783 until his death in 1799and remains a model of patriotic virtue.Anderson House, the former home of Ambassador Larz and Isabel Anderson,has been headquarters of the Society since 1938. Modern members of theSociety - descendants of the American and French officers whose service secured theIndependence of the United States - work to preserve the memory and promote the idealsof the heroes of the Revolutionary War.
