Built from 1757, to display the statue of Louis XV.

English translation:
To facilitate the crossing of Reims and honor the king, eighteenth century councilors and planners created a vast square with a statue of Louis XV here in the medieval district of Grand Credo, the heart of this Gallo-Roman city. Construction of Place Royale began in 1757 under the direction of (Jean-Gabriel) Legendre, and continued until 1912. The statue, the work of Jean-Baptiste Pigalle, was unveiled in 1765: dressed as a Roman emperor, Louis XV's peaceful arm extends above allegories of happiness of the people and the strength of good government. While the allegories are original, the statue of the king, destroyed in 1792, was replaced in 1818 by a copy made by (Pierre) Cartellier. The Holy Ampoule was smashed on the statue's pedestal on October 7, 1793.
