This marker commemorates the 275th anniversary of the naming of the site that became the city of San Antonio.

On the feast of St. Anthony of Padua, June 13, 1691, Padre Damian Massanet, Franciscan missionary and Governor Don Domingo Teran, leaders of a Spanish expedition to east Texas, encamped on the banks of this river, and here Padre Massenant celebrated the 1st Mass — Subsequently the city of San Antonio was established here in 1718.
