David J. Brewer, distinguished jurist, lived in Leavenworth from 1859 to 1889. He served as judge of the First District Court of Kansas, 1865 to 1869; justice of the Kansas Supreme Court, 1871-1884; judge of the U.S. Circuit Court, 1884-1889; and justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, 1889-1910.
Justice Brewer was one of Leavenworth's most prominent citizens, a member of the Board of Education, 1864-1869, and superintendent of schools, 1865-1866. David Brewer school is named in his memory.
