The Eckington School was built in 1895 asa frame, one-room school for African Americanstudents from the nearby communities ofEckington and Poplar Ridge. The schoolbuilding is typical of the ungraded schools ofthe 19th century that had all grades housedtogether in the same room. Such schools werecommon in rural communities until the mid-20th century. The Eckington School buildingclosed in 1941. This structure stands as a rareexample of the nearly vanished one-roomschoolhouse type, illustrating the importanceof education among the rural black communityin the decades after the Civil War.
